When first observing a laser treatment, to many it seems like a very simple procedure to perform—all you need to do is point at an area of skin and shoot. However it is not as simple as it looks.

There are number of factors involved in the process that allows an experienced technicians to deliver a safe, effective treatments that get consumer some great results. It is crucial these factors are learned from an experienced, skilled IPL practitioner.

Number one concern when discussing Safety of Skin rejuvenation treatment with IPL is the interaction between laser and skin. All non-invasive light based aesthetic treatment follow the theory of selective photothermolysis which describes how non-invasive laser/IPL light is attracted to pigment in tissue while leaving the rest of the skin alone.

For laser and skin interactionexample: during an IPL hair removal or laser hair removal procedure, the light is attracted to the pigment in the hair follicles.

While for sun spot/age spot removal the light is attracted to the pigmentation spot that needs to be treated; and During a capillary or thread vein reduction treatment, light is attracted to the red pigment in the veins… etc…

In laser tattoo removal light is attracted to pigment in the tattoo (bear in mind that if you have a colourful tattoo you may need to have treatments with more than one device to get rid of the tattoo effectively as different wavelengths of light will be working on different color in the tattoo).

It is important to know that while hairs, spots, veins and tattoos all contain pigment your skin contains pigment as well. Melanin or pigment in your skin is what gives it its color.

So, in order for any of these treatments to be effective, there must be a difference between the pigment in your skin and the pigment in the specific ailment you are treating. If the IPL or laser parameters are not set correctly, the light energy could not only effect the treated ailment, but could also affect the outward appearance of the skin as well.
